We’re often asked to quote for “electrical testing”, and it turns out the customer means PAT testing, or fixed wire testing, or isn’t sure which they need. They’re two different things, and most businesses need both.
Fixed wire testing: the building’s installation
Fixed wire testing covers everything that’s part of the building: the main switchboard, distribution boards, cables, sockets, light fittings, switches and the supplies to fixed equipment. It’s carried out to BS 7671 and recorded on an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR).
As a guide, offices, shops and schools are usually tested every 5 years, and industrial units and warehouses every 3 years. See how often a commercial building needs an EICR.
PAT testing: the equipment you plug in
PAT (portable appliance) testing covers the electrical equipment that plugs into the installation: computers, kettles, extension leads, power tools, heaters and so on. It follows the IET Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.
There’s no fixed legal interval. The current edition of the Code of Practice takes a risk-based approach, so the frequency depends on the type of equipment, where it’s used and how it’s treated. A power tool on a building site needs checking far more often than a monitor on an office desk. Read more in is PAT testing a legal requirement.
What about hard-wired equipment?
Things like hand dryers, water heaters and fixed machinery sit in between. The wiring that supplies them is covered by fixed wire testing, while the equipment itself can be inspected under the Code of Practice. A good contractor will make sure nothing falls through the gap.
Why you need both
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require electrical systems and equipment to be maintained so they don’t cause danger, so far as is reasonably practicable. The fixed installation and the equipment plugged into it are both part of that. Your insurer, landlord or fire risk assessor may ask to see records for both.
At a glance
- Fixed wire testing: the building’s wiring, boards and fixed accessories. Done to BS 7671, recorded on an EICR, usually every 3 to 5 years for commercial premises.
- PAT testing: plug-in equipment. Done to the IET Code of Practice, recorded on an asset register, at intervals set by risk.
One visit, both done
We carry out fixed wire testing and PAT testing for offices, schools, warehouses and other businesses, and can often do both on the same visit to keep disruption down. Tell us about your project or call 01525 582582.
